Someone on Twitter pointed me to this item not too long ago that I thought was pretty slick—especially for those of us with aging eyeballs. It’s a means of mounting a red dot or micro-prism sight to the rear sight of the rifle. I no longer own an M1A, but if I did, I’d seriously consider this product. It mounts the optic much lower over the bore axis than other optics mounts for that platform that I’ve seen or used, and at $85.95, it seems reasonably priced.

Had to go check it out to see if they made a mount like that for a Mini-14. Been looking for a mount for Mini-14 for a long time, unfortunately mine is an older "181" model that it won't work on.
