I am surprised that Lott made a serious error in one of his conclusions. On the part about religion of the shooter, he lumped religion not stated in with explicitly stated as no religion. These are two very different classifications. He then compared this to those who answered the Gallup demographic poll as not having a religion. This showed that Christians and Jews were underrepresented in the shootings based on population. To do this accurately, the percentages should have been based on only those cases where a religion for the shooter could be identified, including the explicitly stated no religion as one of the groups. This might change the results of the religion portion of his figures.

A very minor technical part of the study, but it does show confirmation bias when we look at it to say if religions is known it is Muslim. This may be correct in the end, but his data does not show it. And it could be just the way he wrote it up in the chart, using poor language for the chart.

EDIT: I just looked at the pie chart he shows for religion and used the percentages to recalculate it the way I think it should have been calculated. I assumed there were exactly 100 cases and counted each percentage as one. I then took out the 59% where religion was undetermined. That makes Muslim 26% of the cases where religion of the shooter was known, compared to their being just 0.8% of the US population.

I also did the same thing with the political affiliation pie chart. It changes the Islamic extremist affiliation to 30% of the case where the political affiliation of the shooter is known. So, in cases where the religion or political affiliation is known, Islamic extremists are way over-represented.

No disagreement but I am happy to see something to counter the current prevailing message being spread by the same people that labeled AntiFa and BLM riots as "peaceful protests".

Check my edit where I recalculated it. Just remember to put the qualifier clause in "where religion or political affiliation is known" and it really shatters their narrative.

There's an unintended consequence to various folks warping the FBI's definition of a mass-shooting (to make the numbers bigger and hence push their own agenda). However, doing it their way, it's - quite visibly - no longer white males who perform most of the mass-shootings. Oops.

Enter stage-left: a fascinating website, Mass Shootings, which posts the photo of every "mass shooter" - and each photo contains a link to the incident itself. Super cool to browse through:
