State Leadership(or lack thereof)

Since it was suggested, we start a new thread regarding our opinions of Texas State leaders, (Governor Abbott in particular) I thought I would oblige.

Any and all State level officials, are open for discussion.

I'll Start.

I have had several policy disagreements, with Governor Abbott, regarding his handling of the Covid pandemic. I think he got bad advice, and followed it.
I have not had any issues with his overall leadership style, until then. I feel his handling of the recent hurricanes, was done about as well as could be. His support of 2A issues has been, better than any Governor, in my lifetime.
I think that Governor Abbott, has realized his early mistakes regarding shut downs etc. and has started to respond to the voices of Texans, as well as take cues from other States, like Florida, and South Dakota.

I hope that he has also learned from his promotion of alternative energy, during this latest weather event. He has promised to make drastic changes, and I will hold him to that promise.
Abbott, has not been perfect. But I still remember some of the clowns we have had in that office. As of right now, I don't know of another candidate, that I would endorse.
These are just my opinions, and worth every penny you paid for them.

Any and all State leaders are fair game in this thread, even if the term leader is used loosely.

I agree with your general sentiment of Governor Abbott. I can see why a lot of people may dislike him. He really blew the wuhuflu handling. His renewable stance is pretty bad in hindsight, but it looks like he's turning around. He has definitely done some questionable things. If we look at his history and what he has done for us overall, I still have to give him two thumbs up. I am not a leftie, so I'm not going to "cancel" him just for a couple shortcomings when his governorship has been a fairly good one. But when the time comes for his reelection, I will still be voting for the best candidate on the Republican ticket in the primaries. If that's not him, then so be it. The only exception will be if there's a very dangerous person on the Democratic ticket that we need to kick off, in which case I'll probably be voting Democrat in that next primary. Hopefully it won't come down to that.

As far as my current reps are concerned, I don't really have any critiques. They haven't done anything bad. They also haven't done anything all that notable either, but that doesn't mean they're not fighting in the shadows. Hopefully my rep's energy background will help improve our energy concerns that were brought up by the bad weather last week.

I do want to make a quick shout out to my US house rep, though. He is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and he's a big proponent of nuclear energy just like I am. Hopefully he does a good job of pushing that over the green energy the lefties want to put us on.

I agree. I think his decisions on Covid were pushed on him for fear of getting the "Trump Treatment". That is why his mandates were pretty relaxed compared to many states. It looks like he is about to fix that situation.

"We’re working right now on evaluating when we’re going to be able to remove all statewide orders and we will be making announcements about that pretty soon," Abbott said.
Further more, I think he has been a friendly voice for gun owners over all.

In his State of the State address last week, Gov. Greg Abbott said, “Texas must be a Second Amendment sanctuary state.”

What have we gained regarding the 2nd Amendment with Abbott in charge? Open carry. That's about it.

Fines for signs - what a joke.
Property tax reform - We were told we got relief when all we got was a limit on how much it could INCREASE. That's not relief.
COVID 1984 - Do I really need to list his !@#$ ups?
Inviting out of state big tech companies to TX - Sure they will bring a lot of tax dollars to the state. At least the workers will based on spending because the companies themselves get tax breaks. And they bring their out of state, left wing ideals with them.
Green Energy - was cloudy and not windy today. I'm sure that was good tax money spent subsidizing wind mills and solar panels.
How much is in the "rainy day fund?" - Government is not suppose to have a surplus of dollars. I guess we are lucky that they don't just blow it and actually supposedly save some money but that money should be returned to the tax payers.

Why should my tax dollars go to police Dallas or Austin when they cut police budgets. He claimed he will freeze their property tax revenue for having to send in the DPS but why not deduct the cost from the amount the state gives them? Or better yet, deal with the consequences.

I'm more than a 2A voter and Abbott was just the next chump in line to take the governor's mansion. Just like Patrick will follow him and Paxton if he doesn't go to the pokey. Then whoever takes Paxton's spot as AG when he is Lt. Governor, will be on the train to take over down the line.

The border and handling crisis such as hurricanes are about the only thing I can say Abbott has done a decently.

I hope we get somebody good to primary him. Or a 3rd party that's worth 2 nickels.

You forgot Campus carry, removal of other prohibited weapons, and reduction of LTC fees.

Abbott, is Governor, he can only sign or veto laws sent to him by the legislature. I am more frustrated by the fact that we have had a Republican majority, in both the House and Senate for several years, and cannot get legislation passed, that reflect our values. I have no problem allowing the minority, to have a voice, but allowing them to chair key committees, and stall passage of bills, is not acceptable, and in my opinion does not reflect the will of the majority of Texans. JMHO

If he wants Texas to be a 2A sanctuary state, he could always add it as a priority item to the Legislature.

I did forget about those and letting people qualify with a .22 which I belive is good for numerous reasons.

He may just sign the laws put in front of him but that doesn't stop Abbott from bragging about the property tax bill.

You are spot on about the Texas Congress and lack of supporting our values and letting the minority party head committees. If the roles were reversed it would be completely opposite. I keep hoping Alan West turns that around and makes the Texas Republican party grow a pair. Maybe he'll run for governor, one can hope.

Another thing the bugs the ever living crap out of me is the unanimous vote for House speaker. It just screams good ole boy system.
